Just like so many other success stories, ours also begins in a garage. On July 1, 1979, chemist Klaus Noack and electrical engineer Harald Göritz register their company, Gonotec, with the Berlin-West Commercial Register. A garage, a laundry room, and the back room of an annex in Berlin-Lichterfelde serve as the first production facilities. The company founders, with bell-bottoms and sideburns, are now ready to stand on their own two feet and make their dream become reality: producing laboratory devices that are reliable and always reflect the latest technology.
But they have to wait six months for their first order. Christmas of 1979 brings with it their first contract. Noack and Göritz are charged with finding out if the phosphate levels of Lake Tegel—a source of drinking water for the west part of the city at that time—are too high. The two get to work in their garage. This is where Gonotec’s particle test device is born.
And this is the start of the success story that continues today. In May 1980 they hire their first employees and the company moves to Berlin-Schöneberg, into their first real commercial facility. With seed capital from the bank, Noack and Göritz purchase their first production machines and develop the freezing point osmometer, which they name OSMOMAT 030. They hire more employees and their customer base grows.
Today, 40 years after its founding, Gonotec is not only an international company, but also a global leader in many areas of osmometer technology. Our products are certified to ISO 13485. Gonotec osmometers are used on all five continents and in almost every country around the world. Medical, pharmaceutical, and biotech customers appreciate the accuracy and durability of Gonotec devices.
Thanks to short innovation cycles and ongoing development, we have been fulfilling the aspirations of Gonotec’s founders for 40 years and meeting the needs of our customers by reacting quickly to changes in technology. Devices such as the OSMOMAT 3000, which was developed in 2013, set the global standards for today’s technological innovations.
This is possible because we implement processes that are optimized and streamlined, place great importance on understanding customer requirements, and support a development department that keeps pace with a market that is continuously changing. Nevertheless, we have remained true to ourselves over the decades. Our production halls still have a familial atmosphere. Our employees know each other personally and appreciate everyone’s uniqueness. It’s because of them and their commitment that we are successful. So it is no surprise that our guiding principle is “We are the osmometer people.”
Starting at Gonotec as a student, Jan Celinšek succeeded Klaus Noack in 2001 to become General Manager. His loyalty to the company and his path to advancement over the years also shape our corporate culture: flat hierarchies and fairness are part of the course, as are working together to create outstanding products and achieve corporate success.
Since 2008, Gonotec’s headquarters have been located on the banks of the Spree, where the company Herlitz once produced pencils and advent calendars. Ninety percent of Gonotec’s osmometers are still produced here today. This is quality “Made in Berlin” in the truest sense of the words. The international nature of Germany’s capital city is evident in our workforce: East and West, Muslim, Christian and secular, women and men all work together to achieve a common goal. Perhaps it is precisely this diversity that makes us who we are.
